West Nile - Dec 2, 2012

Enjoying some soft snow at the West Nile area

With Black Prince and Highwood Pass areas closed in K-Country (Grizzly Bears & Seasonal Closures respectively), the search for different backcountry locations to explore and replace these is expanding. West Nile is a nice gladed area coincidentally near Mosquito Creek and Noseeum Creek off Highway 93. Thankfully there were no disease laden bugs to be seen and the snow was quite enjoyable. We ran into a few folks who had ventured up to ski the apron below the headwall, you might be able to see four of them below the left couloir (larger photo in the photo gallery).

Snow pack in the trees is still a little thin near the bottom and crossing the bow river could present a challenge in areas. The tour is about 4km round trip, a bit more effort than Bow Summit just a little further along the road. Nevertheless we got some great turns in. Saw about 10 other people out enjoying the conditions.

Check out some shots from today in our photo gallery.
