Revelstoke - February 3, 2012

Sun & Snow at Revelstoke Mountain Resort

With the large high-pressure ridge over Western Canada at the moment, the snowfall forecast has been looking very dry (probably the driest it’s been since we added the snowfall forecast map to our site). Although we love skiing Revelstoke Mountain Resort when it’s been puking snow, it’s also a spectacular spot for some bluebird turns.

Vermillion Peak - February 11, 2012

With the recent high-pressure ridge persisting, we have been experiencing a bit of a snow-drought in Western Canada. The exception is some recent snow in the coastal range, along with some snow down near Rossland & Nelson B.C. The lack of fresh snow combined with some warmer temperatures and sun over the past two weeks is making it tougher to find good turns.

Kananaskis Country - February 19, 2012

The two week snow drought in Western Canada came to a close this past week with a few cm of snow falling across most of the resorts, with Castle mountain reporting 20cm this morning! Most of the popular backcountry areas have lots of tracks (relatively speaking), but the skiing conditions are still great if you stay off of the south facing aspects which have a sun-crust from the past two weeks. The formation of weak layers that formed during the the recent period with no snow (sun crust, surface hoar, etc.) create an instability as it becomes buried by future storms.

Chester Lake Snowshoeing

With the avalanche danger ratings increasing to considerable as new snow falls on top of the sun-crust and Valentine's surface hoar layer, we decided to change up our winter activity choice for Monday, and head out to Chester Lake area, which is popular for snowshoeing, and has cross-country ski trails as well.

Snowy Weekend - Feb 25, 2012

This past week the snow returned, and dumped snow over most of Western Canada. Serious snowfall was reported in the Nelson, BC Whitewater area, along with Fernie & Castle Mountain. The weekend snow wasn't great for photos, and aside for some tough visability due to overcast skies and snow, the ski quality was great - the sun-crust from the previous snow-drought is almost entirely covered with the new snow, although there was certainly a loss in some snow-pack during the sunny two weeks. Keep an eye out for sharks.
